Tips & Tricks to Master the Boards!

This is a step-by-step procedure on how to overcome the board exam, whatever profession you may be in. I tackled with my board exams just June of this year. And here are some things that I wish I knew before!

YEARS BEFORE:

So you may have this 'popular' status to keep in school. That 'I'm-too-good-for-studying aura'. Yes, I have been there and I know how going out with your friends seems to be more fun than staying in the library and bury your face in your Anatomy-Physiology book. But I'm gonna offer you a life hack: READ WHEN BORED. Yes, read when you don't have anything better to do (eg. in the bus, at the jeepney, while waiting for people). You can do this discreetly if you prefer! :)

A better trick though is training your body to read at least 30 minutes per day. Increase the time until you have 2 hours of reading per day. A trick with this is that you must choose whether you're a morning person or a night person. If you're the first one, you must get up earlier in the morning and read before preparing for school. If you're the latter, you must extend a few hours to read before settling in bed. In short, you need to find that certain point of day where you can fit reviewing your schedule.

Basic review tips:

Give yourself a price: A quirky way of reviewing I found on the net is the `gummy-bear` method. The idea is that you need to finish a whole paragraph before you get to eat a gummy bear. Of course you can substitute a chocolate, or any treat you want! :)

As much as possible, stay away from your very sexy and seductive bed. Yes, it is very tempting to go for a more comfortable position. But you are compromising your concentration and you'll find yourself having some difficulty in sleeping in the future.

I personally don't go for the 'serve-only-one-master-at-a-time' trick. We live in a different era now, and we're basically tied to our gadgets. I found it better when I serve two masters. If I want music while studying,  I listen. If I want to text, I text.

Months before:

You`d probably be in a review center by now, and with the limited time you have, the smartest way you can deal with the pending exam is to concentrate on the review given by the reviewers. It would be better if you master the review materials given than to have blurry memories of pages you`ve read frantically.

Weeks before:

Pack on the prayers. One thing that reviewers always tell us is that you can`t rush yourself. And you will ALWAYS feel as if you`re unprepared during the day even if you spent the last year studying! One key is confidence, yet a bigger key is faith!

Three days before:

We were told that you should stop reviewing and drop everything days before. The rationale is that your brain can`t process whatever you`re cramming into your mind. But I have to confess, I read some the night before *teehee* :)

The day before:

Get everything ready. Prepare a checklist that you`ll need. The last thing you`d want is a major hassle all through out. Here are the things I needed during my licensure exams:

  • Notice of admission
  • PRC issued envelope
  • Brown envelope
  • Plastic envelope
  • Pencils (Mongol No.2)
  • Black ballpen (prepare a spare to use)
  • Eraser
  • Fan
  • Jacket (you might encounter classrooms that are really hot or those that are really cold. So be prepared otherwise!)
  • Candies - on my day of exam, I got so sleepy during the second set I think because I got myself so psyched!
  • Rosary (a secret: this may sound absurd. But whenever I had no frickin idea what the answer was, I`d pray, and pray, and pray. Then comes the miraculous enlightment!)
You also have to set all alarm clocks (like, 5 of them) to make sure you don`t sleep in. This serves as a special warning: it does happen. I know a couple of people who don`t wake up on the day of the exam. And The whole thing would be forfeited.

The day of the exam: Get pretty! Make sure you feel great! And rock that exam!
